Hot off the press comes the news that Florida has a brand-new millionaire.

Who wouldn't like to become an instant millionaire? For one lucky woman, that dream is now a reality with the Powerball lottery prize of $590.5m being won in Zephyrhills, Florida. Rather than chasing an online slot progressive, she chose to play the numbers in the lottery and it seems it has paid off in a spectacular fashion.

Her name has not been confirmed, but lottery executives say the 26-year-old bought the $2 ticket in a Publix supermarket. (If the mystery is killing you, don't worry – she will need to be named because lottery records are a matter of public record in Florida.) If she bought the ticket alone, she will be the single largest lottery winner in American history, even with the taxman taking a quarter of the cash. The $590m win just beats the previous Powerball record of $587.5m, won in November of last year.

The huge jackpot meant that ticket sales for Saturday's draw were astonishing, with people queuing at petrol stations and convenience stores to buy their ticket. As expected, queues were longest at the stores known to have sold winning tickets previously – proof positive that superstition is well and alive within the lottery community.

Interestingly, Florida has had more winners than any other state that participates in the nationwide Powerball lottery.

After the incredible win was announced on Saturday, the Powerball jackpot was reset to $40m. No doubt with the frenzy of activity sparked by this incredible win, the jackpot will soon rise to the heights of the fabulous $590m prize!
