A grandmother who fell after walking home from the bingo games hall has thanked the group of good Samaritans who helped her.

At 9pm on a cold Friday night in February, Laura Dykes, 89, was walking home with two friends after playing bingo games at the village hall when her toe caught on the edge of a kerb and she tripped. The fall left her severely cut and bruised and she needed hospital treatment. Fortunately, a small group of villagers lived nearby dialled an ambulance and the elderly widow was taken to hospital.

A paramedic arrived immediately to dress Laura’s wounds but the ambulance took almost eighty minutes to arrive. In that time, Laura was surrounded by people who took off their coats to keep her warm, brought hot water bottles and chatted to her to keep her company as she waited. She hadn’t broken anything, but she was left shaken.

Laura, a former home care worker, thanked the group of good Samaritans who had stopped to help her. ‘As an 89-year-old, the experience of waiting over an hour for the ambulance to arrive was quite disturbing. However, the comforting words, hot water bottles and jackets provided by complete strangers were most comforting. Such gestures should give us all hope for society in general.’
