Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the 2013 Ballon d’Or, beating Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery, in a star studded event in Zurich.

Ronaldo was finally able to break the four year monopoly of Messi and wrap his hands around the golden ball since winning it in 2008. It was the expected result and sports betting fans would have found it hard to get any value on betting on the Portuguese superstar as bookmakers shortened the odds on Cristiano.

For those not familiar with the award, the Ballon d’Or is a football award given to the player who has been deemed to have played the best in the previous season. The award is all down to votes by coaches and captains of international teams, in addition to journalists worldwide. It is one of the most coveted and respected allocades to be received by any football player on the world stage. One only had to look at Cristiano on stage with his son accepting the award alongside Pele, and all the emotion and tears that could not be contained by the 28 year old Portugal captain and Real Madrid player.

No one can deny that Cristiano has done more than enough to get this award. Ronaldo has been the centre of everything for his club and country. One of the most impressive stats is his 66 goals in 56 games in all competitions for club and country. furthermore, the player almost single-handedly pulled Portugal through to the World Cup finals in Brazil, and was the defining factor in the play-offs against Sweden.

Finally, Ronaldo can be regarded as the perfect specimen for football. His physique, stamina, speed, footwork, free kicks, and headers, make his game complete. Anyone who has played or trained with the man has admitted to his dedication, hours of training and willingness to learn from his mistakes and to perfect his game at every level. The great thing about the player is that he is still at his best and we can expect even more in the years to come, and who knows what the World Cup 2014 has in store for us and him. Congratulations to one of the greatest players, Cristiano Ronaldo!
