“I mean there are usually no direct answers to how do you play such-and- such a hand when somebody raises in front. Every poker situation is different. The only way you can learn is to play” - Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson’s words couldn’t be more true, the best way to prepare yourself for each hand is simply practice, but is it wise to play for money if you’re still not confident of every hand you play? Isn’t it better to practice playing free online poker

Well to begin with, there’s no way you’re going to ever learn how to play each and every hand in a game of poker full stop. There are so many varieties of hands that you could get when you play poker, that it only makes sense to play for free if you just want to play for fun or you are stilling learning the ropes. Fundamentally, what makes poker the game that it is, is betting. It adds the nail biting tension, the outrageous excitement, it makes you think about your moves much more intensely because you know your money is at stake.

After all, when you play for real money in a game of poker, you are putting your money down as a proof of your ability to beat the competition. You’re saying, I’ve got a better hand than these guys, in fact I’m so confident that I’ve got a better hand than these guys, I’m going to put down £50 to prove it!

Poker is a game of confidence as much as it is a game about risk management, you always want to minimize the element of chance, and that element is only taken out of the equation when you’re staring at the river. So if you’re feeling confident, play for keeps but if you’re feeling unsure, play for free.
