Chelsea get their first win of the season in the Champions League with a 4-0 win over Steaua Bucharest.

Jose Mourinho would have been pleased to finally see his team live up to some of the expectations, but still has a long way to go as the London club is third in the table, with three points together with Basel. Chelsea supporters will be betting that the ‘chosen one’ will be able to steady the ship and bring the club back to the glory days when he was first in charge.

There were positive signs that Juan Mata and Andre Schurrle are finally starting to show their talent, but their manager will want their performances to improve and become more consistent. It has to be noted that Schurrle had his best game so far for his new club, and will be hoping that he can continue in the same vein in order to prove that his move for £18m from Bayer Leverkusen was worth it. Eto’o was also showing some signs of his brilliance and worked well with Mata to create a few chances on the opposition’s goal.

Ramires opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 19th minute of the game, and then went on to score another early on in the second half. The visiting team was helped by Georgievski turning in the ball into his own net. Frank Lampard got onto the score sheet with a late goal in the dying minutes of the match to emphasize the Chelsea’s dominance over a relatively sub standard team.

The win will nevertheless boost hope that Chelsea will go on to the knockout stages of the Champions League. The Chelsea manager was quick to point out that ‘the result is important because if we didn’t win, we are under pressure’. Chelsea now face unbeaten group leaders Schalke next week, and it will be vital that Jose Mourinho’s team show their desire to progress through the competition.
