Kevin Pietersen is hopeful that he can be involved in the Third Ashes Test at Old Trafford on Thursday.

The batsman will be praying that he can finally get over a calf injury and it seems as if there is a good chance to get the ok, as the player went through a test on Tuesday with physiotherapist Craig de Weymarn with no negative feedback. England selectors have already set up an alternative if things don’t go to plan, in the form of Nottinghamshire star James Taylor. But the way the Ashes have started for England and the chance to be part of history in terms of a 5-0 Ashes series whitewash over Australia, I am betting Kevin will make it his business to ensure his fitness come Thursday morning.

Australia will want to come into Old Trafford confident that they can contain a rampant England, but it will be difficult as England’s 347 run victory at Lord’s really exposed the massive difference in class between the two teams. David Warner’s return to the Australian squad should provide a boost to the team and offer the selectors a viable alternative to the poor performing opener Chris Rogers. Rogers has only managed to make 89 runs in four innings and it would be no surprise for coach Darren Lehmann to decide to go for Warner in the hope of providing some stability to the top order. Warner is very capable and dangerous player, scoring 193 for Australia A in South Africa, and would definitely take advantage of a flat pitch with no swing.

No one can describe the huge sense of excitement and anticipation as we all wait for the start of the Third Test at Old Trafford. For the England team, even though James Anderson says that they are not thinking about a 5-0, it must be one their minds. For players like Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell and James it would be fitting revenge for the 5-0 defeat in Australia in 2006/7. England need to be merciless and not lose focus and concentration. Old Trafford is the perfect place to make it 3-0, as the entire place is cricket mad, the ground is ideal and the atmosphere will be to die for.
