Lacklustre draw for England

England drew 1-1 against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley tonight, with a disappointing performance which will leave Roy Hodgson with lots to think about for his Brazil game on Sunday.

Sports betting fans would have been expecting England to perform better and at the very least beat a team they have not managed a win for five games dating all the way back to 26 March 1985! The only real high point being Ashley Cole’s golden cap and the superb goal by Frank Lampard.

The Republic of Ireland was to take the lead in the 13th minute of the game with a solid header from Shane Long. However, England equalised ten minutes later with a goal from Frank Lampard, after Daniel Sturridge did the ground work to make the opportunity for the Chelsea midfielder to get hi 29th goal for his country. Frank Lampard is just one behind Alan Shearer’s England goal tally, which is truly unbelievable for a midfielder to accomplish.

Seamus Coleman showed his worth on the night with a good game for his country, whilst Theo Walcott looked menacing down the flanks, but just did not get the service from his team mates in order to have a telling impact on the game. Roy Hodgson will be worried about what looked to be a serious injury sustained by Daniel Sturridge, especially with the Brazil game looming and the lack of creativity tonight. The Republic’s goalkeeper, David Forde made sure of the draw and unbeaten run with two good saves in the final minutes of the game.

The atmosphere in the Wembley stadium was at times very noisy with The Republic’s fans making themselves heard and enjoying the occasion. England fans would have expected that the home advantage would have given their team the edge, but will have to satisfied with the draw for now. Roy Hodgson and his team will now look forward to their next game in Rio against the ever talented Brazil. We can only hope that the samba atmosphere bring out some much needed inspiration for our England squad!
