The China Open is on and Rafael Nadal can regain his number one spot he lost way back in July 2011, if he reaches the final in Beijing.

Nadal has been in excellent form since his return from injury, winning ten titles from twelve finals and winning 61 out of 64 matches for the year. If anyone can regain the number one spot in record time it will be the Spaniard! Online betting firm Paddypower have gone with Nadal as slight favourite, priced at evens, with Djokovic 11/10 to win the China Open outright. This is in spite of the fact that Novak has won the tournament in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Rafael has a very real chance of being successful in Beijing, with him already beating Djokovic in the US Open Final. What is even more worrying for the reigning world number one is that Nadal only has to get to the finals to regain the top spot, no matter how Novak performs. This means that it all up to Nadal to take what can only be a well deserved number one spot, considering the near perfect form he has displayed all year.

Rafael eased passed Colombian Santiago Giraldo 6-2 6-4, and the Spaniard is well aware of the importance of this tournament. He has already been quoted as saying that ‘If I’m able to keep playing well every day and at the same level I played the last couple of months, I will have the chance to be there, to be number one in the future’

In other news, Victoria Azarenka lost to world number 43, Andrea Petkovic. This would have disappointing for Victoria who would have hoped for a good display and a strong chance of defending her title won last year. Laura Robson, the British number one, also failed to stay in the tournament with a second round defeat against Angelique Kerber. The 19 year Laura, who is currently ranked 38th in the world simply made too many mistakes and gave the advantage to her opponent.
