It has been announced that Giovanni Trapattoni has parted ways as manager of Republic of Ireland.

After the Republic was defeated 1-0 by Austria on Tuesday, there was a meeting between the Italian and The Football Association of Ireland, where it was agreed by mutual consent that a new manager was the best course of action. Sports betting fans would have seen the writing on the wall, with Trapattoni’s post match conference on Wednesday being cancelled, an obvious sign that his leaving the role was imminent, even though he was contracted up to the end of May 2014.

Giovanni Trapattoni was well respected and liked in the Irish camp, and in his five years in charge of the squad, he got The Republic of Ireland to the finals of Euro 2012. The manager’s parting words reflects his love of the job and passion of the Irish supporters. The 74 year old record was quite impressive, with out of 64 games in charge, the team only lost 16. This is quite a feat considering the size of The Republic and resources at its disposal.

This was reiterated by Robbie Keane, who only had admiration and respect for Trapattoni and the way in which the manager brought the Irish team up to another level, with all the players having a sense of confidence and belief that every game was winnable. However, Keane was also quick to point out that fans should manage their expectations on how much success The Republic is capable of, when compared to other countries of much higher populations and resources.

Betting and speculation on who will become the next Republic of Ireland manager is already beginning to hot up, with McCarthy already one of the few rumoured to be in with a realistic chance of being offered the job. Paddypower already has betting for who will be the Next Ireland Manager, so why have a bet with the Irish bookmaker and see whether you can predict the new appointment!
